Everyone Is Gay…HOORAY!

3 Jul

You’ve seen it in the news. The Supreme Court recently deemed DOMA unconstitutional, and many people around the country rejoiced. One step closer to equal rights for ALL humans! Following this ruling, and the celebrations on Pride Day, A Great Big World released the official music video for their song ‘Everyone Is Gay’ (previously, ‘Somewhere In The Middle’). The video is catchiest and most adorable gay pride anthem that I’ve seen and I thought I’d share it with you!

The Song: Say Something

Artist: Ian Axel

Why you should listen to it: Off the album This Is The New Year’,  ‘Say Something’ is a heartfelt and beautiful ballad. Although it is instrumentally simple compared to other tracks on the album, the emotion behind this song is heart breaking. It starts of with one note on a piano, and then into the complementing chords. Ian starts to sing, his voice echoing. You can feel the sadness in his “say something, I’m giving up on you”.  It makes you want to cry for him. The chords pick up as you go into the pre-chorus/first verse. With the repetition of the second chorus, you can really hear the mellotron.  It follows the chords, harmonizing with them. In addition to the mellotron, you can hear a vocal harmony provided by the lovely Miss Jenny Owen Youngs.  She is a friend of Ian’s, and a wonderful artist as well. Everything dies down for a second verse, and then the final build up.  You can hear the organ, the mellotron, and the voices. The song is just… so powerful. So emotional. It’s amazing how just three instruments and two voices can move you. Maybe I’m just an emotional person, but… goodness. This song is beautiful.  I had the privilege to see him perform this song live, and it was amazing. You could hear a pin-drop. It was crazy. I may or may not have teared up a little…

okay so, here’s the best part. Ian Axel and Chad Vaccarino (his friend and the other half behind ‘Ian Axel’ the band) have this album up on ‘bandcamp‘. You can download it for free if you’d like; or, you can donate a few dollars. Download it for the price of a coffee at Starbucks (:
